The Big Dance Pledge 2016

The Big Dance Pledge is a free opportunity to create a dance through a connected creative process and perform with thousands of participants across the world

As part of the UK-wide Big Dance programme, this 2016 edition is created by choreographer Akram Khan with an original music track by composer Nitin Sawhney.

Teachers, artists and participants are invited to learn the original 4-minute choreography or develop their own version to suit their style, abilities and experiences of the themes of the work, which include journey, migration and overcoming of adversity.

Akram has created the choreography with three variations to enable groups of mixed abilities to perform together, incorporating seated movement and flexible options in each section of movement. Where artists and practitioners would like to develop their own versions of the work, information on the creative process and themes that underpin Akram’s work are available. For more help creating a dance that is unique to your group take a look at our ‘Inspired By the Big Dance Pledge’ films

A suite of resources will be available, including online tutorial films, a written teaching guide, the music track, documentaries and a participant certificate to download and view online. Access to resources is free via online registration, where group leaders can return to add photos and video clips of their Big Dance Pledge creative process and performances. Sign up now to access the full set of free online resources.

Paul Doyle reflects on working with the Akram Khan dance team to create the Big Dance Pledge.

On Saturday 5th February, I traveled to Saddlers Wells to take part in training with Jose Agudo and Jen Irons rehearsal directors for Big Dance 2016. The dance is based on the idea of aspiration and achievement and looks at how participants become connected with one another and form a strong group identity through taking part. At Saddlers Wells 16 dance professionals from across the country were brought together to form the official Big Dance team. They (myself included) will be responsible for teaching the dance to groups across England and overseeing mass dance events in the build up to 20th May. The choreography has a beautiful spiritual quality to it that can only be experienced through taking part.

This year the Big Dance event at Trafalgar Square and The Big Dance Pledge, which will be performed in over 140 countries on 20th May at 2pm GMT has been choreographer by Akram Kahn. We are looking for participants who would like to learn the Big Dance Pledge and perform it on 20th May.

If you would like to be involved please contact info@mdi.org.uk for further details of how you can learn the pledge.
