Framing Liverpool through Michigan Eyes

On Monday 2 June 2014, 13 students from Michigan University arrived in Liverpool for a 1-month visit. The project was organised by Professor Anita Gonzalez a scholar and dance / theatre practitioner and founder member of Urban Bush Women. Anita has previously collaborated with and delivered classes for MDI.

The students were here to learn about Liverpool and to find out about the different black communities in the city. While they were here they also created a performance piece about their experiences.  Before they arrived and during their visit the students contributed to a blog - you can read their entries here.

The performances of Framing Liverpool through Michigan Eyes took place at the Lantern Theatre on June 27th and 28th. Performances were attended by representatives from all the host organisations as well as key cultural commentators from Liverpool and the general public.  Both performances were followed by a Q&A chaired by Tunde Zack-Williams and Anita Gonzalez and Rachel Rogers, these discussions centered around issues of race in Liverpool and Detroit where many of the students were from.

We hope that this project is the beginning of a long term partnership with the University of Michigan and look forward to developing plans for another project soon.  You can read an interview with Anita outlining the projects aims and their ambitions for next year in the University of Michigan's on line publication Beyond Borders here
