Physiotherapy Through Dance

Wednesdays | 2:30pm - 3:30pm | Free

These workshops are for people living with Dementia and their carers. The classes are co-run by MDI’s Jennie and Maxine, two professional dancers experienced in working with people with dementia, and Clare, a qualified physiotherapist from The Brain Charity.

The 12-week course is free, and both people with dementia and their carers are welcome to join in these easy-going sessions. No dance experience necessary, just come along wearing loose clothing and the will to shake a leg a little!

The aim of the sessions is to reduce the risk of trips and falls, and to use physiotherapy exercises through dance routines. The physiotherapist can give one-on-one feedback over the 12-week period, to advise participants on best practice for them. Meanwhile, our professional dancers will practice dance movements, setting the therapy to music, to help boost self-esteem and activate bodily memory in an inclusive environment.

Refreshments will be provided during the workshops, and our studio is fully wheelchair accessible, including toilet facilities on the ground floor.

Places are limited, so please contact [email protected] or call 0151 298 2999 to reserve a place.

Led by MDI in partnership with The Brain Charity.

Please note: classes are temporarily being held off-site, at the Alive Centre, Kensington.

Our studio is at 24 Hope Street. Please press the buzzer for the studio or office to gain entrance. The studio is located on the ground floor, where you can also find an accessible toilet.

Registration

If you are new to a class, please arrive 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time in order to complete a short registration form. Information collected during registration is required for health and safety reasons only, and will not be shared externally.

What to Wear

Leggings and t-shirts or other comfortable clothes are perfect for most classes. Some classes recommend specific dance shoes, but otherwise bare feet is fine. Check with us in advance if you are unsure: 0151 708 8810.

Payments & Pricing

Class prices vary, and some are subsidised through our charitable funding. All classes are payable on the day in cash, unless otherwise stated - for example, a number of classes ask for payment for a full term in advance (specified on the listing). A number of classes are also available to book online in advance - a "book now" button will appear where this is the case.

For all classes run by MDI teachers (Beginners & Open Ballet, Beginners & Open Contemporary, Pro Class) you can purchase a 10 Class Card, which can be used across any combination of these classes. Please note that all 10 classes must be taken within one year of purchase, and cannot be used for MDI summer courses.

Term Dates

Our classes follow the academic year, with a reduced timetable during half-term or other holidays for Liverpool schools, and will be highlighted as such. To check school holiday dates, please visit liverpool.gov.uk
