Shaping The Future: Perform at LEAP

We’ve already announced an overwhelming line up for LEAP 2019, featuring some of the best performers, dance artists and companies working in the UK right now. Motionhouse (known for their stunning opening ceremony performance at the London 2012 Olympic Games) will open the festival on 3 October at Hinterlands with new aerial production WILD, whilst Rosie Kay returns after the success of MK Ultra last year with Fantasia, a work performed by three fierce female dancers to a soundtrack of Vivaldi, Purcell, Beethoven and Bach.

This year’s festival is more varied than ever, and we’re inviting aspiring dance artists and performers based in the North West to apply for development opportunities, including the chance to perform as part of LEAP’s first ever fringe programme, created in partnership with LIPA.

Following the recent news that Dance Manchester will pass the torch to Company Chameleon after 27 years of nurturing dance in Greater Manchester, we’re thinking about our future, and legacy in dance development. Now that our Director Martina Murphy is settled in, she’s keen to reestablish MDI as a sector leader in the North West, supporting and nurturing the stars of the future:

“Dance Manchester has done incredible things for dance in the region, and its an incredible legacy to leave, as well as a huge honour for Company Chameleon to inherit. We’re excited to see how our colleagues at Company Chameleon develop, and are keen to work more closely with our northern neighbours moving forwards.”

If you’re a dance artist or performer from/based in the North West, you can apply to be part of LEAP. We’re looking for:

  1. Experienced dance artists to apply for grants of us to £2000 to develop new work, so be performed at LEAP’s first ever fringe
  2. BAME performers from all disciplines to perform at a scratch event curated by Seke Chimutengwende and Alexandrina Hemsley
  3. Aspiring performers aged 18-30, looking to test out new and experimental work as part of LEAP’s fringe

Full details of all opportunities can be found here. Deadline for all proposals is 28 July, and please contact us directly with any questions.

Tickets for LEAP 2019 will be on sale from Monday 29 July. See the full programme.
