Artist Mental Skills & Wellbeing Q&A Series

MDI’s Mental Skills and Wellbeing Q&A talks will explore the importance of psychology to a dancer’s own wellbeing and optimal performance. We have a number of guest speakers who are experts in the field. The session will be lead by MDI’s intern, Manisha who will ask questions around certain topics. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Whilst the industry has a focus on physical training, these sessions will give you can insight into how you can prepare psychologically. 

Speaker: Terry Hyde

To start us off, we have Terry Hyde who will answer your questions on the stigma of mental health within the dance industry and the different transitions that dancer’s go through.

Terry started dancing at age 6, joining the Royal Ballet age 18. He moved to London’s Festival Ballet (now ENB) as a soloist and performed in West End musicals, Film and TV.

Terry attained an MA in Psychotherapy, validated by Middlesex University in 2012, and in 2017 set up the website www.counsellingfordancers.com, specifically to address the mental health needs of dancers and in 2021 created the Help4Dancers app.

Terry understands the mental health needs of dancers and uses that in his one to one therapy sessions and in his proactive Mental Health Self-Care Workshops.

Kristina Pfeffer will be answering your questions on confidence and imagery.

Kristina Pfeffer is the owner of The Ballroom Coach, a sport psychology consulting company specialising in helping dancers achieving excellence through optimising their mindset.

Kristina is originally from Denmark but moved to London at age 19, to pursue her career as a professional dancer. She is the National Danish Champion in Latin and has been part of a number of tv shows both in the UK and internationally and has performed all over the world. She has trained in a variety of styles but specialise in latin dancing. After finishing her career in dance she opened her own dance school and worked with dancers of all levels and ages. She has owned dance schools both in London and the Dominican Republic. She then completed a BSc and MSc in Psychology of Sport and Exercise in London. Always being aware of the importance of how mindset can change our lives both in dance and in life.

Kristina is passionate about helping dancers reach their potential in dance but also doing it while living happy and confidently. She is now working with dancers both on an individual level and with organisations to improve the mindset of dancers everywhere. Some of the topics include performance anxiety, confidence and effective communication.She is a boardmember in DIFO- The Danish Sport and Exercise Forum, promoting sport and exercise psychology in Denmark and IDM- International Dancing Minds promoting mental health in dance internationally.Kristina is currently living in Denmark and doing research at the University of Southern Denmark and preparing to do a PhD.

Speaker: Dr Lucie Clements

Dr Lucie Clements (commonly known as the Dance Psychologist) will be answering your questions on perfectionism.

Dr Lucie Clements is a Chartered Psychologist (British Psychological Society). She has published peer-reviewed research and spoken at international conferences. She holds a BSc Psychology (University of Surrey), and MSc and PhD in Dance Science (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance).

She has worked with leading dance schools (including Rambert, Central School of Ballet, London Contemporary Dance School) and companies (including National Youth Dance Company, Far From the Norm, ZooNation) across the world, to help performing artists achieve better wellbeing and excellence in performance.

She has lectured across Psychology, Dance, Dance Science and Musical Theatre degrees, most recently as a Senior Lecturer in Psychology (University of Chichester).

Lucie cares deeply about supporting the wellbeing of all dancers, regardless of genre or current level, and believes that psychology can help all dancers to flourish, both on and off stage.

Speaker: Sophia Martins

Sophia Martins is an international dance neuroscientist, dancer, performer, and dance teacher. Sophia will be answering your questions on neurodiversity.

She trained in somatic practices, has a degree in psychology and postgraduate studies in neuroscience. She also worked as a mental health practitioner for 4 years. Through her Neuroscience of Dance project and Dance Integrated Healing Method, she provides neurocognitive and dance healing tools.

She has been helping dancers and dance teachers all over the world for the past two years with the following key aspects: coping with injuries, neurological recovery, improving class environments and teaching techniques, overcoming struggles (memory, equilibrium, learning difficulties), improving mental well-being, improving dance skills, and using dance for healing purposes.

Currently, she still assists in research, conducts the Dance is Medicine Podcast and occasionally teaches cognitive neuroscience and brain imaging research methods.

Alexandra will be answering your questions on body image, alongside talking through exercises to help you.

After a career in the Performing Arts, Alexandra Zibisow pursued her passion for psychology studying Dance Movement Psychotherapy. She is now a registered Movement Psychotherapist practising in the NHS.

Alexandra focuses on providing individual and group therapeutic support, emphasising a holistic approach to mind and body.

Additionally, she holds workshops supporting members of the creative community, informed through her personal experience in the industry, clinical practice, and current research, propagating the positive aspects of movement.

Speaker: Manisha Aggarwal

Hybrid: This session will be held at MDI, however you can attend via Zoom. 

Manisha Aggarwal is a current MSc Sport Psychology student, following the completion of her degree in Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University.

She has trained in hip hop for 5 years and found an interest in supporting dancers. Since she has worked with many diverse populations from children with SEN to secondary school pupils. Now she is an intern for Merseyside Dance Initiative, providing an insight to how psychology is important in dance!

To summarise the Q&A talks, this event will be hybrid. You can come into the studio or join online. The workshop will help you to reflect on what you have taken from the Q&A’s. As well as this, Manisha will talk about and do some activities on resilience.
