#MentalHealthAwarenessMonthWe have another great email to share for Mental Health Awareness Month, they wish to stay anonymous but said they had moved to Liverpool from North America last year. “Having recently moved to Liverpool alone without my family, I have struggled with loneliness and making friends. However, through coming to MDI’s dance classes I have been able to meet and socialise with new people which has really improved my mood and I feel much happier living in Liverpool now.” “It was intimidating coming to my first class in a new country, I was very anxious but when I arrived there was a really welcoming atmosphere which helped me to relax.”“The dance classes themselves have given me a goal and focus to become better, which has really increased my motivation for life in general.”“If anyone is struggling with social anxiety or loneliness I recommend attending a dance class as they’re so great for meeting and interacting with new people! The welcoming atmosphere helped me to relax and come out of my shell, which helped my performance and social skills.”...Accessibility: {The image shows a female dancer posing on top of a wall, standing on one leg with the other raised and bent behind her. She is wearing a white T shirt and a black skirt with a red/white/black flannel tied around her waist. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #May2022Joe Anderson is a regular class attendee at MDI. Weekly Joe participates in Contemporary, Hip Hop, Breaking & Afro Dance sessions. We were thrilled to receive an email from Joe, expressing the joy that dancing brings to him and the positive impact dancing has on both his social life and mental well-being. “Dance has really helped me to steer my life in the right direction. MDI in particular, has been great for my mental health as the varied programme keeps me busy all throughout the week. I have made so many new connections, I couldn’t imagine what my life would be without dance.”“Each day brings new challenges and life still has its ups and downs but now I face these challenges with a much clearer mind and more stable attitude.”“I look forward to dancing at MDI for many years to come in Liverpool” - Joe Anderson Thank you Joe for sharing your experience with us and raising awareness of both Mens Mental Health. Its always a pleasure to see you in the studio! Accessibility {The image shows a male dancer posing in the centre of a road. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth Gracie had the privilege of catching up with Mark Griffin this week at the end of his weekly #DanceForParkinsons session. Mark has been participating in the Dance For Parkinson’s programme at MDI for over 5 years and he is incredibly passionate about the impacts that dancing continues to have on his health and mental well-being. Although, Mark admits that in the beginning, he was apprehensive about participating in the Dance For Parkinson’s programme as he felt vulnerable having had no dance experience up until this point. Now, 5 years on Mark says that dancing “ignites his soul” and walking though MDI’s door every week “lights up his life”. He also added that despite experiencing losses due to living with Parkinson’s disease, he has gained so many new skills through Dance. Mark feels empowered and proud to be part of the Dance for Parkinson’s community. “I’m a dancer now and the benefits are 10fold. I perform my very best every week… Its exhilarating, gives me energy and is incredibly therapeutic.” Accessibility {Mark, on the far right is wearing all white with a large blue stripe across the front of his T-shirt, running in a diagonal line.
