A small team, MDI is a family of dedicated dance lovers.
Martina Murphy is Director of MDI, a role she has held since January 2019. She has overall responsibility for MDI’s strategic direction and day to day operations, working with a talented group of colleagues to further MDI’s mission to inspire people through dance and unlock potential.
Previously, Martina led on the UK Cities of Culture Programme for the British Council, connecting Hull 2017 with 22 countries. Martina is also responsible for a series of cultural firsts in the North West, including Liverpool Football Club’s Red Gallery in the Bluecoat, bringing Picasso to the Contemporary Urban Centre and leading the Partnership and the Development team during the opening of the award winning Everyman Theatre.
Project Development Manager - LEAP
Karen is Project Development Manager, working with the team, venues and artists to deliver LEAP 2019. She has over 20 years experience producing and curating events nationally and internationally across the cultural, corporate and not-for-profit sectors. With a passion for cultural events and festivals, Karen has delivered live music, literary and film events for companies including the British Film Institute, Wellcome Collection and the British Library as well as producing events through her own company Little Atom Productions. Karen is also a holistic life coach, yoga teacher and wellness consultant.
Community Dance Artist (Children & Young People) and Interim Finance Officer
Paul works with young people, devising and delivering an outreach programme of dance activity that incorporates community and educational work throughout the boroughs of Merseyside. He teaches regular classes and workshops in schools, and developed MDI’s annual Schools Showcase event. Paul is the director and choreographer of Merseyside Youth Dance Company, a group of 13-19 year olds who develop and perform original contemporary dance pieces for events all year round. In our studio, Paul teaches weekly Merseyside Youth Dance Company and Beginners’ Contemporary classes.

Community Dance Artist (Older People)
Jennie delivers an outreach project of dance activity that incorporates community and educational work throughout the boroughs of Merseyside. Leading on our programme of dance for older people, she is director and choreographer of our 50 Moves performance company for older dancers, who have twice performed at Sadler’s Wells’ Elixir festival. Jennie teaches Open Level Contemporary, Adult Tap, Men! Dancing! and 50 Moves classes in our studio.
Marketing & Evaluation Officer
Sinéad is new to the team, covering marketing, press and monitoring for MDI. Her role involves planning marketing campaigns for each strand of our programme, including city-wide events like LEAP Festival and International Dance Day. Sinéad looks after our website, social media and print campaigns, as well as managing press in-house. She monitors all of our participation, collating feedback and data for reporting to Arts Council and other funding bodies.

Laura is currently on maternity leave, and has been part of the MDI family for almost ten years.
